Course Overview

You can enrol on the regulated NEBDN level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (RQF) qualification with us at anytime and begin your theoretical training.

Requirements to enrol are that trainees need to be living and working in the UK to complete this course. A trainee dental nurse will be able to work in surgery before the formal training with us begins.

We recommend they are enrolled to start our course once they have completed the employer’s on boarding and induction processes at the start of their employment and have completed their probationary period. As soon as the trainee is enrolled they can begin the course.

The GDC state that formal training needs to begin within 2 years of employment and trainees must be enrolled to start within that timeframe.

The blended course provides:

· Full tutor/assessor support and guidance via E-mail, telephone or Teams
· Virtual Teams group sessions with all Learners, this adopts a classroom approach. These are all recorded.
· 1-2-1 sessions with the Learner and assessor alone

· All educational material and guidance on how to complete the NEBDN portfolio of Evidence (POE)
· All lectures with voiceovers to make learning easier and more enjoyable
· POE provided in the cost of the course
· Personal student log in to the dental nurse training website
· NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (RQF) Specification comprehensively covered
· POE completion plan to help keep learners on track, set targets given along the way
· Written mock exam along with virtual group support sessions leading up to the final exams
· Mock verbal practice professional discussion with our centre
· Final group session before the final exams

Surgery & Study Time

There is no stipulation on the amount of clinical time for a trainee dental nurse to be in surgery to complete the POE. The amount of surgery time and study time needed can vary greatly depending on the trainee, the rate they learn and their work and home commitments.

We recommend that a dental nurse trainee should get as much clinical time as possible. Ideally learners would be given time to complete their POE in work time as well, however, it is not always possible and work from home will be expected. This will be discussed with each practice and learner at the induction.

Induction & Lecture Structure
The induction process will initially involve a telephone call with the learner to discuss the course expectations and to answer any questions the learner may have. The induction is then covered via a detailed presentation. The Trainee Dental Nurse and Mentor will need to watch this together.

All aspects of the course will be covered and we ensure that each member of the team know their role in the training. Any outstanding paperwork will be completed at this time. Every lecture has a presentation with a voiceover to guide you, presented in an easy to understand and methodical manner. Online tests and assessments are provided throughout the syllabus.

All training is online following a set timetable to include teams classroom based sessions and full tutored online support.

POE

Learners will evidence their learning through an “Electronic Portfolio of Evidence” with the NEBDN’s online platform called pebblepad. The system is easy to follow and very user-friendly.

Pebblepad is compatible with a desktop or on your mobile phone device you can download the pebblepocket app.

There are three sections where learners will submit evidence of their knowledge, skills and behaviours in the field of Dental Nursing. These are:

• Knowledge Evidence
• Witness Evidence
• Performance Evidence

Each section contains a set of Assessment Criteria taken from the NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (RQF) qualification. Learners must provide sufficient evidence that fully meets the Assessment Criteria to pass this Portfolio of Evidence.

To help learners understand fully what is expected of them, each Assessment Criterion is further broken down into ‘Tested Content’ so they can see exactly what they need to cover.

Examination Format

The first part of the examination is a written online knowledge test available every April and November. Learners have 90 minutes to answer 75 Multiple Choice Questions, and is graded pass or fail.

Entry to the written exam is conditional on the POE being fully completed and signed off by the Assessor, IQA and EQA.

Professional Discussion (formally known as the OSCE’S)

Once the written examination has been passed the learner can enter the second and final part of the exam. The professional discussion will last 55-60 minutes and will be conducted virtually via Zoom with an NEBDN examiner.

Topics covered will be based on real workplace situations covering the nine core duties of a qualified dental nurse, aligned with the GDC Scope of Practice
